Hyperbaric therapy

The science of breathing under pressure

Hyperbaric therapy involves breathing under increased atmospheric pressure, allowing more oxygen to dissolve into the blood plasma and increasing oxygen availability throughout the body.

Research continues to investigate the physiological effects of hyperbaric environments, including their influence on:

  • Inflammation
  • Cellular signaling
  • Tissue oxygenation

From emerging research to clinical application, understanding the science is where it begins.

How hyperbaric therapy works
Henry's law equation, which describes how more gas dissolves into a liquid as pressure increases
Henry's law: at higher pressure, more gas dissolves into a liquid. Under pressure, more oxygen dissolves into blood plasma.

Exploring the research

Hyperbaric therapy and Lyme disease

As interest in hyperbaric therapy continues to expand, practitioners are exploring its potential applications across a variety of clinical conditions.

Lyme disease remains an area of investigation, with ongoing questions regarding mechanisms, clinical outcomes, and appropriate treatment protocols.

Hyperbaric equipment safety

Not all hyperbaric chambers are FDA cleared

Do you know what to look for?

FDA 510(k) clearance matters when choosing equipment for your practice. Ask us about hyperbaric equipment safety, or review the hyperbaric chamber non-negotiables: a safety and compliance checklist from the International Hyperbaric Association.

Why OxyHealth

FDA cleared. Safety focused. Built for confidence.

For nearly three decades, OxyHealth has specialized in hyperbaric technology, providing FDA 510(k)-cleared chambers designed with an emphasis on safety, quality, and patient comfort.

  • FDA 510(k) cleared, not just registered

OxyHealth chambers are cleared Class II medical devices (Product Code CBF, 21 CFR 868.5470). Registration alone involves no FDA review of the product.

  • ISO 13485 quality management

Manufactured in the USA under an ISO 13485 certified quality management system.

  • ASME PVHO-1 standards for hard chambers

Our clinical hard-sided chambers are built to ASME PVHO-1 pressure vessel standards. Documentation is available for every model.

FDA clearance applies to the device. Clinical use, patient candidacy, and treatment protocols are determined by a qualified clinician. Read our FDA statement.

Questions practitioners ask

What is hyperbaric therapy?

Hyperbaric therapy means breathing in an environment pressurized above normal atmospheric pressure. Under increased pressure, more oxygen dissolves into the blood plasma, which increases oxygen availability throughout the body. Pressure and the oxygen concentration being breathed are separate variables, and protocols are set by a qualified clinician.

What does FDA 510(k) clearance mean for a hyperbaric chamber?

Hyperbaric chambers are Class II medical devices (Product Code CBF, 21 CFR 868.5470). 510(k) clearance means the FDA reviewed the device through its premarket notification process before it could be marketed. Being FDA registered or listed only means a manufacturer or device has been recorded with the FDA, and it does not mean the device is FDA cleared. Verify clearance for the specific chamber model. OxyHealth chambers are 510(k) cleared, not just registered.

Which OxyHealth chamber is right for my practice?

It depends on your space, patient volume, and the pressure range your clinicians want to work with. Portable soft-sided chambers (Respiro 270, Vitaeris 320, Quamvis 320) operate at 1.3 ATA and need little setup. Clinical hard-sided chambers (Fortius 420 and Fortius 420 EXP) operate up to 4.0 ATA and are professionally installed. A product specialist will recommend a configuration for your practice.

What training does OxyHealth provide for practitioners?

Professional packages include 8-hour online Practitioner/Clinic Training. OxyHealth also connects clinics with independent education organizations offering programs of about 40 hours that cover safety, operations, and staff development.

Is installation included with clinical hard-sided chambers?

Yes. Fortius 420 and Fortius 420 EXP chambers are installed, assembled, and calibrated by OxyHealth certified technicians, with training for your team. The Fortius 420 EXP uses a split design for clinics with limited access.

Is financing available for clinics and practices?

Yes. OxyHealth partners with Brickhouse Capital to offer financing designed for clinics and businesses investing in hyperbaric chambers. A product specialist can walk you through options with your quote.

How much does a clinical hyperbaric chamber cost?

Pricing depends on the model, configuration, and training package. Request a specialist call and OxyHealth will send a custom quote along with business financing options.

Is hyperbaric therapy FDA approved for Lyme disease?

No. HBOT is not an FDA-approved indication for Lyme disease. Lyme disease remains an area of investigation, with open questions about mechanisms, clinical outcomes, and appropriate protocols. FDA clearance applies to the chamber as a device, and patient candidacy and treatment protocols are determined by a qualified clinician. The International Hyperbarics Association publishes educational resources on this topic.
